Places to visit

Bathed by the estuary, the municipality of Mugardos has a deep taste of the sea. The relief is undulating and quite low, typical of the coast, forming beautiful and picturesque landscapes. Its estuary is an ideal place for shellfish because of its sandy bottom and silt.

The whole Mugardese territory is framed in a coastal strip where there are different coves - O Baño, A Barca, Santa Lucía, O Seixo - points - Redonda, Peteiro, Ratón, Fincas, Promontoiro and O Seixo -, and the beach of the Bestarruza. It is therefore impossible to talk about Mugardos and not about the sea.

One of its main attractions lies in the complex formed by the village and the port, with its views of the estuary. We can start the walk in a peculiar way, making the trip of about 10 minutes from Ferrol, enjoying the scenery and the sea breeze. From the sea rise an unknown perspective of the spectacular entrance of the estuary, with the castles of La Palma and Sano Felipe facing each other.

Then we arrive at the delicious and very busy promenade, where there is a great activity related to the sea (caulking, octopus mace, fish cleaning...). Starting from the House of the Clock, headquarters of the Brotherhood of Fishermen and Tourist Office, we will find the houses of balconies so typical of the coast of Coruña, some of them with gallery, which accentuate the charm of Mugardos as a fishing village. This space is called Canton of La Mariña, just up to the monument to the Anchor, in the roundabout of ascent to the urban center.

From here, we would enter in what is called the Canton of Cora, which extends to the access to the beach of Bestarruza. Between the two cantons, we will find Fonte del Loureiro, and we will remember the legend according to which anyone who drank of his water would marry a woman from Mugardos.

The tour also gives them the possibility to taste, in any of the inns, which follow each other, the famous octopus to the mugardesa, To the Galician, in empanada... in any of its variants makes the delight of the many tourists who approach every weekend.

After recovering the strength of the valley, it is worth continuing the comfortable walk through the port to the cozy beach of La Bestarruza, very sheltered and with calm waters, where we can still observe the ruins of the old Salazón Factory, from the 18th century.

The cove of the Bath is found in direction to the Castelo de la Palma, through a pleasant walk surrounded by trees and some unbeatable views, in the place of the Tides. After the Pazo do Baño and put it on the river Esteiro, we can take the detour on the right, which will take us along the Camino Vello, to the place of La Redonda, with its picturesque lighthouse and a small inlet where we can see the women shelling.

If we follow the road we will enjoy an enormous image with the Castle of La Palma and that of San Felipe and the narrow and spectacular mouth of the estuary. A few meters from the Castle of la Palma is located the large circular rock known as "The Queen's Butt", in memory of the landing of Mariana de Neoburgo, when she was traveling to meet her future husband, King Charles II.

The panoramic view is unbeatable we continue to the Monte da Bailadora, about 265 meters above sea level, of special natural interest. Remains of old military batteries are conserved at the summit. From there the image of the estuaries is of an incomparable beauty, worthy of the best postcard.

The Inlet of A Barca is another area of natural interest. This inlet is reached through itineraries in which the exuberant nature and the sea are omnipresent elements, entertaining us with a thousand kinds of brightness and tones. In this space the best clam is extracted from the estuary.

The vision of the shellfish farmers reflected in the fertile waters from which they obtain the precious fruit is unrepeatable, framed by one of the most picturesque marine groups in the territory: O Seixo; its port of decorated and colourful houses with brightly coloured windows and balconies, some with piers, along with sumptuous Modernista and Indiana mansions form a unique architectural ensemble.

Mugardos offers many possibilities to visitors, its seafaring origins give it a special character. We can also find examples of Indian, military and religious architecture.

Indiano Architecture

The fishing village of Seixo is one of the best examples of Galicia to enjoy the Indiana architecture. The origins of this type of construction date back to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when those emigrants from the Americas returned, they made their fortune and promoted initiatives that helped improve the living conditions of their neighbors.

They built schools, bridges, laundries, casinos and houses that imitated architectural models from the host countries. This is the case of the Casino Progreso de Franza, in modernist style, or the Francisco Vizoso School Group, a few meters from the previous one with rectangular floor plan, they go in different forms and a central body with two balconies.

The Chalet of Esperante, from the end of the 19th century, in the centre of the Seixo, stands out for its eight-water roof, alpine chalet style and its decoration based on brick and wood worked as lace. Finally, and also in the Seixo, the house Montero Cabana, from 1925, consists of three heights and in it stands out the attic of the deck.

Military Architecture

As far as military architecture is concerned, the Castle of La Palma is undoubtedly one of the great attractions of Mugardos, both for its architectural characteristics and for the historical episodes that it starred together with the Castle of San Felipe, on the other side of the river, and for the natural environment in which it is located.

Built in 1597 and renovated in 1869, it is located at the end of the C-122 road, after surrounding the pretty cove of the Bath and crossing the village of A Redonda.

Together with the Castle of San Felipe, on the opposite side, the short distance played a fundamental defensive role in several warlike episodes when, from the sixteenth century onward, the conditions of the protected estuary called the attention of the Crown, which makes it strategic, becoming the city of Ferrol the capital of the Military Department of the North and the location of the Royal Shipyards and the Military Arsenal. From these two castles was controlled, together with the disappeared castle of San Martiño, all the traffic of the ria, blocking the passage of the boats by laying a chain between the different fortifications that made the estuary unsurmountable.

Religious Architecture

Among the many examples of religious architecture found in the municipality, it is the church of Santiago de Franza that has the most artistic value. Neo-gothic style, it has a single nave with cross vaults. Inside, the Renaissance tomb of Pedro de Sillobre, lord of Boado, a local nobleman from the 16th century, stands out.

The church of San Xiao, or of Arriba, has a possible late Romanesque origin, with Baroque additions, such as the tower of 1845. It preserves an interesting baroque altarpiece inside. Close to the church stands out the beautiful San Xiao transept, in good state of conservation, which presents symbols of passion.

Among the churches of posterior construction and neoclassical style is that of San Xiao de Abajo, that of San Xoán de Piñeiro, with skylight, and the church of San Vicente de Meá, erected in the XIX century on a chapel of the XVI century, dedicated to Saint Lucia.

Another interesting example is the chapel of Lodairo or of the Ascension, in Franza, near a pilgrimage path. It dates from before the 12th century and features a single nave covered with a barrel vault.

In this space you will find the 18th century Lodairo Cruise, with an ancient cross with a Christ and the Virgin in a praying position. Here is celebrated a popular pilgrimage on the day of the Ascension, with pilgrimage to the hermitage and country food.
