Pedro Fernández, of the Cultural Association "Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno"

'I would recommend it for the ease of access that people have to participate in the festival and for the Octopus Festival itself, which is a way to get to know different ways of cooking octopus.'

Pedro Fernández, of the Cultural association "Cofradía de Jesús Nazareno"

Interview: How long has your Cultural Association been participating?

Pedro Fernández: We have been taking part for 4 years, this will be the fifth. I can add little to what the other representatives said. I was lucky enough to get in with everything done, everything organized. Before it was more complicated, they brought you the octopus, called you with 20 kg, come down to the dock, clean them, freeze them... They filled societies with 200 kg.

E: How do you live this event from the Brotherhood?

PF: It is a festival in which we all participated, those of us who are members of the Brotherhood and also some women. Although women are not partners, they come to help us cook and work. We have it as a holiday!

E: How was your experience before participating on the other side of the bar?

PF: I was already there. It was always like a party apart from the Carmen. It is typical of Mugardos. He took advantage of the fact that there were a lot of people for the Carmen on Saturday to stay on Sunday. Now there was a separate party in which all the Mugardeses participated. It’s a wonder! When I was in the military and walked on the outside a lot, when I coincided with the holidays I was delighted to take part in the festival.

E: In your view, what importance do the Mugardos's townpeople attach to this event?

PF: Now all over Galicia is very fashionable the gastronomic celebrations: of the ear, of the filloa, of the bread, of the tapas ... In Mugardos the most typical of here, which is the octopus, the Mugardos style octopus, was very well used. It is very good to keep the typical way of doing it: "Mugardese style". It is a different and distinctive way of the people of Mugardos.

E: Recommend the Mugardos Octopus Festival to visitors.

PF: I would recommend it for a number of reasons, including:

  • The ease of access that people have to participate in the festival. They can practically get to the place with their car. There are 2 car parks, one 10 metres away and the other 200 metres away by the festival!

  • For the Octopus Festival itself, which is a way to get to know different ways of cooking octopus.
